Gravity Title Sequence

style frames, illustration
The film Gravity depicts a story about the human experience of grief and emotional growth. Dr. Stone is the sole survivor of a space debris avalanche, and while her return back to earth is an extreme challenge, she finds determination to keep moving forward through a brief flashback to when she was grieving after her daughter’s death. The sequence utilizes this shift in reality as the main framing device to highlight this pivotal moment of growth and determination.

Process To match the unexpected human aspect of this sci fi story, we chose to explore styles that deviate from what would typically be expected from this genre. 3D was used as the base layer for this sequence, using a toon shader to create a 2D look inside of 3D. Then in Photoshop, we painted all of the foreground objects on top of the renderings to give more texture and create a bit of a foreground-background separation.
